The coveted Selkie Dress. The dress made of sugar plum dreams and went viral at the peak of the pandemic, having a choke hold on the It Girls and wanna-be’s of Instagram. (Let it be known that I, Vivian R. Tang, was a wanna-be.)
But during the second year of the pandemic, I have grown a lot in character and sense of self, and I no longer am a wanna-be. Likewise, I think it is very fitting that during the first week of 2022, I have finally purchased my first Selkie dress. Indeed, no longer a wanna-be because I have the item that I want. 💀
For my very first Selkie, I decided on the most popular style, the one that hit the Internet by a storm at the peak of 2021: The Selkie Puff.
‘Twas about time. After eyeing the puff dress for a year, I’m so happy to finally know what it feels like to wear an elusive Selkie.
And to describe it, the first moment I put it on, I felt like a fairy princess. It really is so magical, the feeling we girls get when wearing Selkie.
The Selkie dress is like the perfect combination of cottage core, which hit the Instagram aesthetic world by a storm in 2018-2020, French rococo, Parisian chic, princess and royal core.
Literally, I think the reason why this dress is so admired and loved by so many girls is because it can fit anyone’s aesthetic. It really is the dress, I think, that made the aesthetic world seamlessly transfer from cottage core to royal core, in which the latter is now all the rage.
One can dress the Selkie up, with full curls and Rococo shoes, going full out Marie Antoinette. Alternatively, one can dress the Selkie in a more edgy fashion, as I decided to do, wearing a Jeffrey Campbell boots to provide some contrast. I was going to curl my hair, but I simply could not find the curling iron the morning of my shoot, so I just gave up. Honestly, I think I am glad I decided to stick with the straight hair. I think it provides a nice contrast to the princess feel the Selkie puff dress gives.
Anyway, I got it in the Heritage Rose color. I initially wanted a white Selkie, but it was not available from Revolve.com, where I had purchased the dress. And the closest thing to it was the Heritage Rose, and I ended up liking the Heritage Rose even better. (It’s also reversible, which is adorable! Two dresses for one. (^_-) )
Another thing I adore about this dress is how the color looks so different depending on the lighting. You can see from my Instagram post here that the dress looks golden under natural sunlight, but on a cloudy day, it is actually soft white!
