Having two adorable 9 months Pomeranians is all fun and games until, on what had been a beautiful Saturday afternoon, both of their harnesses come undone while they go rogue on a duck chase, scaring an entire family of ducks, and the mischievous one (mimi) chases after a fat white duck twice her size to the edge of the pond and decides to jump in, having never swum before…
Last weekend on October 2nd, 2021, mimi & momo got in so much trouble. It was a typical Saturday, beautiful and easy: a slow morning feeding them fresh hard boiled eggs and chicken mince, while I was enjoying a homemade cappuccino.
Breakfast was followed by a trip to the recreation center for some exercise. We arrived home, freshened up, and got dressed for town. I wore my new brown polka dot dress for the first time. Then mimi & momo and I headed to town for lunch.
A very pleasant start to the weekend.
After a light and healthy lunch at the salad bar, my family and I took a trip into the city to do some browsing and shopping, with mimi & momo joining of us of course. After we’d finished, and having refueled with some coffee and chocolates, we thought we’d take mimi & momo for a walk in the nearby park before heading back home.
We failed to considered that it had just rained all morning, so the walkway was all puddled and muddied, and the air was muggy and buggy. But since we had already set foot into the park, we decided to venture on despite the less than ideal conditions. We were having such a lovely day, what’s the worst that can happened?
Should’ve known we’d jinxed ourselves.
About 20 minutes into our walk, there was a large family of 30 or so ducks resting by the shore of the pond. Now, mimi & momo get overly excited when seeing ducks, and it’s really my fault because I have been allowing them to chase the ducks since they were puppies – but on a tight leash.
This time, however, mimi & momo pulled on their leashes so hard that first mimi’s and then momo’s harnesses both came undone! It was bewildering. Immediately, the adrenaline kicked in, and I was on the hunt to chase down my dogs who were on a duck chase. Our quiet Saturday afternoon in the park turned into dog-chasing-duck chase.
Both mimi & momo went rogue chasing the ducks by the lake, and I can’t remember what I saw because it all happened in a flash, and I was too focused on catching my darned dogs. I do think mimi came so close to nipping a few feathers off a duck wing, though. Sorry, duck.
After a few minutes or simultaneously panicking while hunting down my dogs who were hunting the ducks (imagine seeing that on an afternoon walk in the park *), I was able to stop and catch momo, who is more obedient, but mimi had already gone berserk, so much that she followed one, a fat white duck twice her size, to the edge of the pond
The duck waddled into the pond, and the moment mimi was hesitating whether to jump in to follow it or not, I tried to catch her but before I knew it, she was already in. She swam half of the pond chasing the duck when, thank god, she realized this was her first time ever swimming and wasn’t cut out for it, so she swam back ashore.
* Thank god there were no onlookers – can you imagine what they would’ve seen? A circus show! But I almost wish there was someone to film it all bc in retrospect, it was so amusing, and it would be nice to have the memory to look back on. But during, I was too focused on getting my dogs back and safe to record anything.
During the duck chase, I don’t know how I remained rather calm, or maybe I thought I was calm but really wasn’t. It all was a blur – I was first of all shocked that both of their harnesses had come undone, and I was shocked at what was happening: my two dogs had gone unleashed, chasing ducks in the park. I think I had partially blacked out trying to stay calm amidst my internal panic.
Despite that, when mimi swam back to shore, my family and I had a big laugh, hysterically in the park. I bet any onlookers would’ve thought we’d gone mad. We were mostly laughing out of relief because during the whole thing, we were worried out of our minds. And by the time we’d walked back to the car, we were all exhausted.
When we got home, immediately to the bath. Thank god we had leftovers in the fridge. I was too hungry and tired to order pizza.
So yeah, that was my last weekend. Tiring and dangerous but at least it felt like something out of a movie. Moral of the story? I’m still letting my dogs chase ducks, but I’ve since strictly tightened their harnesses
